Kuomintang history. It cooperated with the Communist Party until 1927, when Sun 's successor, Chiang Kai-shek, turned against the communists, initiating a civil war. The war is generally divided into two phases with an interlude. Armed conflict continued intermittently from 1 August 1927 until Communist victory resulted in their near-complete control over mainland China on 10 December 1949. All registered, due-paying KMT party members were eligible to vote. The KMT originated in China in 1912, founded by Song Jiaoren (宋教仁) and Sun Yat-sen (孫中山) shortly after the Xinhai Revolution (辛亥革命). From the KMT's founding in 1912 until the 1949 exile, the KMT cemented a place in China's political history. Sun Yat-sen’s education in the west greatly affected his political thought, and his ideas were revolutionary for a China that failed to modernise and adapt to the changing world. The party’s name is translated as the “National People’s Party of China,” and it referred generally to Chinese nationalists.
